In February 2025, international maize and wheat prices increased due to seasonally tighter supplies and concerns over crop production in key exporting countries. By contrast, international rice quotations declined, as ample exportable supplies and weak import demand exerted downward pressure on prices. FAO’s analysis of the latest domestic staple food price data indicates that prices remained higher year-on-year in many countries during January and February 2025.

The triannual Crop Prospects and Food Situation report provides a forward-looking global analysis of cereal production, market trends and food security conditions, with a particular attention on low-income food-deficit countries. FAO assesses that 45 countries, including 33 in Africa, nine in Asia, two in Latin America and the Caribbean, and one in Europe, are in need of external assistance for food.

Empirical evidence is needed because a priori there are theoretical reasons why VSS may promote or hinder trade.

Employing a number of newly developed datasets, this research project examines patterns and developments in the links between agrifood trade and nutrition and assesses how trade policy shapes food prices.

Global wheat prices declined in November 2024, due to increased supplies from the ongoing harvests in the Southern Hemisphere and improved crop production prospects in parts of the Northern Hemisphere. By contrast, maize export prices exhibited mixed trends, influenced by opposing market factors. International rice prices declined, driven by heightened market competition, harvest pressure and currency depreciations against the United State dollar.

In November 2024, the FAO price indices for oilseeds and vegetable oils continued to increase month-on-month, while the oilmeal price index declined markedly. The oilseed and oilmeal indices stood, respectively, 13.2 and 37.6 percent below their year-earlier readings, while the vegetable oil index climbed to its highest level since July 2022.
