Global maize and wheat prices exhibited divergent trends in August 2025 depending on origin. In the United States of America, strong harvest prospects pushed prices down, while in the European Union and the Russian Federation, harvest delays and quality concerns drove wheat quotations higher. By contrast, international rice prices declined, reflecting continued intense competition among exporters.

Famine (IPC Phase 5) is confirmed in Gaza Governorate and projected to expand to Deir al‑Balah and Khan Younis governorates by the end of September 2025. Nearly 2 million people are projected to face severe acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above), with about 641 000 in Famine (IPC Phase 5). The conflict in the Gaza Strip has displaced nearly 2 million people, decimated livelihoods, destroyed infrastructure and caused the collapse of the agricultural sector.

The worst-case scenario of Famine is unfolding in the Gaza Strip, as reported by the latest IPC Alert in July 2025. Between May and September 2025, an estimated 2.1 million people are projected to face severe acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above), with nearly 469 500 facing catastrophic conditions (IPC Phase 5). The conflict in the Gaza Strip has displaced nearly 2 million people, decimated livelihoods, destroyed infrastructure, and caused the collapse of the agricultural sector.

Global maize prices fell sharply in June 2025 on increased seasonal supplies from Southern Hemisphere harvests. International rice prices also declined, driven by weaker demand for Indica varieties. By contrast, global wheat prices increased month-on-month in some regions, despite harvest pressure from the Northern Hemisphere, mainly due to weather concerns in some key producing areas.
