Unlocking the potential of community timber

Growing international and domestic demand for tropical timber has resulted in critical wood supply gaps for many tropical timber-producing countries, in some instances linked to a surge in illegal logging. Growing shortages of legal timber supply have necessitated the exploration of alternative sources of legally produced timber. Community forestry has been recognized as a potential source that could boost legal timber supply on the domestic market of tropical timber-producing countries.
Assessment of the Ugandan commercial timber plantation resource and markets for its products

Forests are critical resources in Uganda, providing numerous benefits, including the most common forms of energy; charcoal and firewood. The current demand for wood products greatly exceeds the supply. This study estimates the extent of the timber plantation resource, characterizes the timber that the commercial plantations will yield in the next 10 years and assesses the markets and demand for forest products from timber plantations.
Sustainable management of logged tropical forests in the Caribbean to ensure long-term productivity

The forest authorities of Belize, Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, jointly with FAO and the University of Hamburg, implemented a regional project “Ensuring Long-Term Productivity of Lowland Tropical Forests in the Caribbean” financed by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
