A live event held online for Codex Members and Observers on 13 November 2023 provided information on agenda, arrangements, and logistics for the 46th Codex Alimentarius Commission, scheduled at FAO HQ, Rome, from 27 November to 2 December.

In opening remarks, the Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, Steve Wearne, United Kingdom, said that “with good preparation, and adherence to our core values of inclusivity, collaboration, transparency and consensus-building, I am sure we will have a productive and efficient meeting”. The Chairperson also outlined his approach for chairing CAC46 and informed participants that similar to 2022, he was preparing a communication on how he planned to approach discussions on draft MRLs for zilpaterol hydrochloride.

For CAC46, even though delegates may not be able to travel to Rome they will be able to listen and make verbal interventions remotely. “Following the requests from Members to maintain high levels of inclusivity, we have worked to have this option available also at CAC46”, said Sarah Cahill, Senior Food Standards Officer, further stressing that “CAC46 remains nonetheless a physical session and delegations should have at least one delegate attending the meeting at FAO HQ”. The Codex Secretariat also invited CAC46 delegates to the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Codex during the opening ceremony on Monday, 27 November, 10:00 am in the plenary, FAO HQ.

More than 170 delegates from all six Codex regions were online to learn more about the arraignments for CAC46. Participants highlighted the importance of preparation in order to enable productive discussions during the Commission and thanked the Codex Secretariat and the Chairperson and Vice-chairpersons of the Commission for their availability.
