В 1999 году на 23-й сессии Комиссии “Кодекс Алиментариус” был учрежден Региональный координационный комитет по Ближнему Востоку, объединивший страны Ближнего Востока (для ФАО) и Восточного Средиземноморья (для ВОЗ). Первое заседание комитета состоялось в Каире (Египет) в 2001 году.
В настоящее время штаб-квартира регионального координатора по Ближнему Востоку находится в Управлении по надзору за качеством пищевых продуктов и медикаментов Саудовской Аравии в Эр-Рияде.
Цели координатора в отношении Кодекса в регионе включают развитие и усиление деятельности контактных лиц и национальных комитетов Кодекса, налаживание связей членов Координационного комитета по Ближнему Востоку друг с другом, с другими регионами и с Секретариатом Кодекса, а также координацию их работы.
Еще одной целью является организация обмена научными и техническими знаниями между более и менее опытными странами региона.
Координатор активно поддерживает использование стандартов Кодекса в качестве основы для национальных законодательных и нормативных актов и планирует продолжать работу по разработке и пересмотру стандартов Кодекса с учетом региональных интересов.

On 7 June 2024, the Coordinating Committee for the Near East (CCNE) regional coordinator, Members, and Codex Secretariat met virtually to celebrate World Food Safety Day under the theme "Prepare for the Unexpected".
The meeting began with a general discussion on food safety events, during which the coordinator emphasized that food safety is a collective responsibility. Iraq’s Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control organized a symposium in cooperation with the Iraqi College of Engineering Sciences, entitled “The Importance of the Codex Alimentarius in Promoting Food Safety”.
