Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics

Mali

Following an in-depth needs analysis through bilateral consultations organized between FAO and the Mali’s counterparts responsible for producing and using agricultural statistics, and based on the information collected through a questionnaire prepared by FAO and completed by the national agricultural statistical team, the following activities, planned for the period 2021-2023, are implemented in Mali with the aim to fill gaps in different levels of technical expertise and capacities.

  • HR Policies: Support in evaluating and establishing adequate human resources policies that allow the national statistical units to operate appropriately;
  • Scholarship Programme: Participation in the scholarship programme;
  • FARM ECO: Technical assistance in collecting data on and measuring key economic aggregates;
  • LOSSES: Support in collecting, measuring and analysing data on agricultural losses;
  • TOOLS: Technical assistance on the use of tools for data processing and analysis;
  • Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI): Training and support to the country in developing, implementing, and maintaining CAPI-based surveys to improve data quality and cost-efficiency of agricultural surveys;
  • INDICATORS: Support in computing timely and reliable CAADP indicators;
  • FARM TYPOLOGY: Support in developing farm typologies for improved policy analysis.

The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics-Phase II (GSARS-II) has achieved a significant milestone with the finalization of the Food Balance Sheets (FBS) package, which represents a tremendous step forward in enhancing agricultural data systems across Nigeria, Mali, Comoros, and Zimbabwe.

The second phase of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) has identified several assistance themes aimed at strengthening the capacities of national agricultural statistical systems in terms of accountability and policy development. In line with this initiative, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been supporting 25 African countries on various themes based on their specific needs. Mali has selected, among others, the themes of economic indicators (FARMECO), agricultural losses (PERTES), farm typology (TEA), and food balance sheets (BA). This mission, led by Samba CISSE and Hamidou KONKOBO, was instrumental in disseminating the results of all GSARS II activities conducted in the country.
