Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics

Following an in-depth needs analysis through bilateral consultations organized between FAO and the Comoros’ counterparts responsible for producing and using agricultural statistics, and based on the information collected through a questionnaire prepared by FAO and completed by the national agricultural statistical team, the following activities, planned for the period 2021-2024, are implemented in Comoros with the aim to fill gaps in different levels of technical expertise and capacities.

  • Scholarship Programme: Participation in the scholarship programme;
  • Basic Training: Basic training in agricultural statistics;
  • AGPROD: Support in preparing survey tools for agricultural production surveys;
  • Master Sampling Frame (MSF): Technical assistance in developing, using and maintaining a cost-effective Master Sampling Frame (MSF) to implement an integrated system of agricultural surveys;
  • TOOLS: Technical assistance on the use of tools for data processing and analysis;
  • Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI): Training and support to the country in developing, implementing, and maintaining CAPI-based surveys to improve data quality and cost-efficiency of agricultural surveys;
  •  Food Balance Sheets (FBS): Support in compiling national food balance sheets (FBS).
The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics-Phase II (GSARS-II) has achieved a significant milestone with the finalization of the Food Balance Sheets (FBS) package, which represents a tremendous step forward in enhancing agricultural data systems across Nigeria, Mali, Comoros, and Zimbabwe.

The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARSII) continues its pursuit to address the statistical needs of developing countries, aiming to elevate the quality and availability of agricultural and rural data. To achieve that goal, a series of comprehensive training workshops have been successfully executed in Madagascar and Comoros, steered by the expertise of trainer TIOTSOP Blaise. The participants, who come from diverse professional backgrounds, were enriched with a deep understanding of qualitative data processing, specifically harnessing the capabilities of statistical softwares.

Unlocking the Potential of Agricultural Statistics in Developing Nations: Dive into how the GSARSII is spearheading a transformative journey in Madagascar and Comoros, enhancing statistical capacities through intensive, specialized workshops. Explore the on-ground impacts, challenges, and triumphs as participants delve deep into the realms of data processing and analysis, paving the way for a future where robust statistical systems empower sustainable development and policy-making in the agricultural sector, all backed by the unyielding support of our global partners.

Comoros organized a first mission from 31st October to 04th November 2022 to support the country in the design of collection tools for the Comoros agricultural production survey.
