Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics

First results on farm typology in Ghana presented to the key users

13/04/2023

The Global Strategy continued the assistance to Ghana on the definition of the national farm typology by organizing an online workshop (10 – 13 October 2022) led by the ESS statistician Mariana Toteva. Using the available data from the Ghana Census of Agriculture 2017-2018, the farm types were defined through two of the four proposed dimensions. Some key indicators such as the share of female holders, the average number of parcels and livestock, the average value of agricultural production, etc. were calculated per farm type.

The discussed concepts and definitions, the tested calculation methods, and the obtained results were included in a methodological note which was presented and discussed during a restitution workshop (17 November 2022) with 30 representatives of the key stakeholders, among which the Ministry of Agriculture (MOFA), National Statistical Institute (GSS), other ministries, state agencies and non-governmental organizations (Agricultural Extension Services, Ghana Cocoa Board, Women in Agricultural Development, CSIR, etc.).

For the institutions involved in the process of defining the national farm typology, it allowed the identification of gaps in the current statistical processes, while the users stressed the need to have more data disseminated on agricultural holdings.

The experience in the definition of their national farm typology, assisted by the Global Strategy, was presented by Mr. Eric Kabore from the Statistical Directorate (DGESS) of the Ministry of Agriculture of Burkina Faso. This exchange was highly appreciated by all the participants who also recognized the need to ensure the continuity of the process of development of the farm typology and its integration into the statistical system of the country.
