Students celebrate World Food Safety Day in Suriname

To promote food safety the Department of Agriculture Production of the Anton the Kom University of Suriname celebrated World Food Safety Day with an on-campus ‘Food Safety Day Event’.

This day was dedicated to bringing awareness and sharing knowledge with other interested persons, including staff and students of the university, on Food safety aspects and also highlight some information on chemical contamination in food.

There was also a fundraising activity carried out for students’ ongoing research projects.  The event was organized by students of the Agricultural Department under guidance of Ms Jane Jagernath, MSc. and Ms Mayuri Jaggan, MSc. researcher/lecturer at the department. Many students and other visitors visited the booth displayed with posters, brochures and flyers. Moreover, a quiz was arranged where visitors could participate to test their food safety knowledge and win small gift prizes prepared by the students.

Altogether a successful and informative day was achieved. The Department would like to extend their gratitude to the staff and students that volunteered for this event: Nandini Debi-Tewarie, Shana Anoep, Wiraisha Gauri, Maya Autar, Lateefa Cairo, Vishaal Jaglall, Dimitri Tjang a Tjoi, Mukhlis Karsodjojo, Kirti Baboelal and Mr. Anand Gahar were part of the team.

The activities also caught the attention of the media and shared more about food safety and this event.
