World Food Safety Day celebrated at Egyptian university

Students and staff of the New Assiut University of Technology (NATU) in Egypt celebrated World Food Safety Day on 7 June, under the auspices of Prof. Dr Gamal Tag Abdel Gaber, President of NATU, who, in his opening speech, underlined that “efforts in the field of food safety must be strengthened in order to reduce the burden of foodborne diseases.”

Ali Youssef, Vice President of the University, added that “food safety is a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers, and each of them has an important role to play in ensuring that the food we consume is safe and healthy.”

The day involved two sessions attended by Dr Gamal Al-Sayed and Dr Ahmed Al- Maslamani, food science and technology lecturers and food safety experts. Dr Al-Sayed talked about the importance of food safety and its role in achieving sustainable development, and how food standards save lives. He also made the point that there is a social responsibility in spreading awareness on food safety. For his part, Dr Maslamani talked about food safety in the home.
