A Milestone for GSARS3: First Agrifood Systems Statistics Workshop in the Pacific SIDS Held in Apia

The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) officially launched its first regional workshop in the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Pacific region in  November 2025, marking a major milestone in the expansion of GSARS under Phase 3.

FAO Concludes the Final Conference of the GSARS Phase II: Celebrating Progress and Shaping the Future of Agricultural Statistics in Africa

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) proudly announces the successful conclusion of the GSARS II Final Conference, held from June 11 to 12, 2024, in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Over 80 participants from partner institutions, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and beneficiary countries attended. This significant conference marked the finalization of the second phase of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS II), celebrating the years of dedicated efforts in enhancing the capacities of national agricultural statistical systems across 27 participating countries in Africa. 

GSARS Concludes the 4th Global Steering Committee Meeting in Abidjan
The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) recently conducted its 4th Global Steering Committee Meeting (GSC) on June 13, 2024, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, following the closure of the Final Conference celebrating the end of the second phase.    
GSARSII Collaborates with Nigerian Bureau of Statistics and Federal Ministry of Agriculture on Agricultural Data Processing and Dissemination Workshop
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMAFS), organized a pivotal workshop from February 12th to 24th, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria under the second phase of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARSII).

FAO Successfully Concludes AGPROD Training in Lesotho

In the final quarter of 2023, The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) completed an essential capacity-building mission in Lesotho, running from September 18th to October 7th, for the fieldwork preparation and the pilot data collection.


Finalization of the GSARS Food Balance Sheets Package: A Global Strategy Milestone

The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics-Phase II (GSARS-II) has achieved a significant milestone with the finalization of the Food Balance Sheets (FBS) package, which represents a tremendous step forward in enhancing agricultural data systems across Nigeria, Mali, Comoros, and Zimbabwe.

The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) is a long-term coordinated initiative to address the decline in agricultural statistical systems in developing countries and enable the production of more and better agricultural statistics. Now in its third phase, GSARS continues to strengthen countries’ statistical capacity through technical assistance, targeted training, and the promotion of cost-effective methodologies - supporting sustainable data production, analysis, and use for informed agricultural policy. This initiative was advocated for and endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) …[more].
