09/11/2023

The Codex General Standard on the Use of Dairy Terms (GSUDT) (CXS 206-1999) took center stage at the Codex-IDF co-hosted webinar, which provided a platform for engaging discussions and insights on the use and implementation of this standard. Raj Rajasekar, Vice-chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, opened the event stating that “The GSUDT is an important text providing key principles and guidelines based on the product identity, integrity, truth in labelling and also fair trade”.

Melissa Cameron, Chairperson of the IDF Standing Committee for Standards of Identity and Labelling (SCSIL), Christian Busse, Leader of the SCSIL Action Team “Protection of Dairy Terms”, outlined the context leading to the IDF survey on GSUDT implementation, noting the importance of adopting Codex Standards at the national level. A panel discussion facilitated by Sarah Cahill, Codex Senior Food Standards Officer, discussed the case studies on the GSUDT implemented in the European Union, India and Mexico.

Caroline Emond, IDF Director-General, closed the webinar highlighting the positive momentum created by the event, noting that the webinar provided inspiring cases studies on both the importance of "between adopting a standard and ensuring its implementation”, stressing that both aspects required active participation by Codex Members as well as Observers.
